The Military Spouse Book Review

Books, Ideas, and Literary Culture for Women in Military Life

Contribute a Review!

IMG_7895Looking for book reviews by folks connected to the military —  spouses or active duty  from any branch, prior or current! Books can be on any subject.

Hello! My name is Andria and I’m a Navy wife currently stationed with my husband and three kids in Colorado. But before all that I taught college English and loved nothing more than an afternoon spent with a book. Now I’m much more likely to read a page here and there with kids tearing around my feet, but that’s okay — I’ll take my reading where I can get it.

If you’re a military spouse who loves to read and talk about books, or a female servicemember (prior or current), I’d love to post your book review!

As for me, some of my favorite recent books have been The Son by Philipp Meyer, The Odd Sea by Frederick Reiken, Seating Arrangements by Maggie Shipstead and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain. Older favorites are Lady Oracle by Margaret Atwood, Blindness by Jose Saramogo and Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem. My tastes are pretty literary, but I appreciate lots of genres and I’ll admit that I’ve read Harry Potter, too. Your tastes can be different than mine. In fact, that’s great. That’s what makes the world go ’round.

Want to write a book review?

Book reviews can be sent to me at andria816@aol.com.  I’m looking primarily for fiction reviews or literary nonfiction, but I’m open to other genres, too. Please try to keep it within 1,000 words (I might need to edit a little for length, with your permission). The books don’t need to have anything to do with the military (most of what I read doesn’t!) but books that deal with military themes are just fine, too.

Contributors should be military spouses or women who have served in the military  (prior or current, active duty or Reserves, Navy, Air Force, Army, Marine or Coastie!). Please include a line or two about yourself and where you’re currently (or have been) stationed.

  1. So happy to have found you! As an Air Force brat now grown and married to a Navy brat living in San Diego, military life runs in our veins. I look forward to your perspective and those of your contributors. Thank you for sharing your reading lists and other military spouse writers.

  2. I wanted to introduce you to a service for all branches of the military that you might be interested in sharing. SoldierSend is an online gift registry for the military. Troops go on and create a free profile, upload a pic, and fill out a wish list of things they want. Supporters can then send care packages with the click of a button. SoldierSend will ship it for you.
